As part of our adult book club (we need to come up with a better name than that!) we are reading and preparing to discuss The Taming of the Shrew in March. My sister suggested we read it as a family and assign out the parts. Right. I'm extremely nervous of Shakespeare and I knew it wouldn't be Jake's first pick. And what about the 12 and 7 year olds? How will they react? Up to this point our evening reading has consisted of books like The Mouse and the Motorcycle, Old Yeller, and Where the Red Fern Grows. This is definitely going out on a limb.
So (deep breath), I collected 3 copies of the play and last night we sat down and started reading. Who would have known that my 7 year old would follow along closely waiting for his chance to read? Who knew there would be laughing? (Good thing I got the book with definitions built in ~ Shakespeare did have a sense of humor) Who knew that we wouldn't want to end after one scene and yet move quickly into another?
Sure, we stumbled over words and cadence but all in all it was a very rewarding experience. One that we are all looking forward to having again tonight. Who knew?
