A few weeks ago my husband and I took a trip. We left our boys with family while we were gone. My oldest (who is 12) stayed with his cousin that he has been best friends with since they were babies. Although we don't live close, anytime they get together it's like no time has passed.
His cousin is writing a book. He's serious about it too. He has pages and pages, chapters and chapters written. It will probably be a series. He's an avid reader and spends most of his time reading or writing.
It must be contagious, or maybe just inspirational.
Since my son returned home, he's writing a book of his own. He brings his notebook everywhere we go and anytime he has a spare minute, he's writing. (Pages and pages, chapters and chapters)
We spent some time the other day discussing the plot of his book. Its really interesting. I shouldn't be surprised, but I think it's going to be a great book. The last time we were at Barnes and Noble he asked me to get him a book on how to write a book. We spent some time looking and he picked one he thought he'd like. He's reading that now and he's come up with some great ideas.
So, this wasn't a kid who has always loved to write. In fact, I'd say he was the opposite. What happened? He got inspired!
This book writing didn't come as a requirement from me, his teacher. No, it was inspired by someone my son loves and respects and who is doing something that he is passionate about! Passion is contagious! I don't think you can fake it. You really have to love what you are learning.
That is what it takes to inspire! That is why it is so important to have a great community filled with others ~ adults and youth alike ~ who have a passion for learning. You need it. Your children need it. It's contagious. It's inspirational.
Get started today. Find someone who you can discuss a good book with. Then invite others to join you. Pretty soon you'll have a great group of friends and scholars to be an example to you and to your children.
